Based on my experience using this kit and the TKT-UNICAM-PFC kit I'm going to say that he was terminating blind, i.e. not using a VFL to provide a visual of connection prior finalizing the connector, which drove the losses he was seeing.I first learned how to terminate Uni-Cams with the TKT-UNICAM-PFC kit and had mixed results with it, though I only used this kit for a couple months before learning on the TKT-UNICAM kit so I didn't really have time to become proficient with it. The one thing I disliked the most with the TKT-UNICAM-PFC kit is the blind reliance on the go/no-go light. Maybe chalk that up to old school mentality.
With the TKT-UNICAM kit and a VFL pushing light (from either direction) you have a good visual indicator of when your properly prepped fiber matches to the factory fiber as the light, visible at the cam, goes out (MM, vast majority of the time) or noticeably dims (SM, light may not always go completely out on SM).

I've only been terminating with Uni-Cams for the last two years. 99% of the rest of my experience (18 years total) has been with hot melt and about 1% with Corning pre-term splice cassettes.
Environment for all experience: DoD in some form or fashion.
Environment for Uni-Cam experience: MDA supporting standard comms and critical circuits, including 10G circuits. All of my Technicians, with the exception of one hold out for hot melt, use the TKT-UNICAM kit for fiber termination. We use Fluke Versiv (previously DTX-1800) for certification. We use Fluke settings for testing OS2 and OM1/3/4 and don't walk away until we have a pass based upon parameters for each respective circuit (i.e. # of connectors, type of connector, etc.).
All of the comm work I have performed in the last 18 years has one thing in common..mission is critical, regardless of mission. Uni-Cam connectors reduce the hands on time for 1st install or repair as well as vastly expanding the capability of the Technician when compared to hot melt. In regards to the TKT-UNICAM kit over either of the Gen 1 or Gen 2 'clamshell' kits I, personally and my choice for my Technicians, will take the TKT-UNICAM any day.
